Getting Started
Do I need to create an account?
No account is required. Civic Action works fully in guest mode. Your address, issues, activity logs, and voting plans are all saved locally on your device.
Creating a free account lets you sync your call activity stats across devices via our secure cloud backend. Sign up any time from the Profile tab.
How do I set my location?
Tap the Profile tab (bottom right), then enter your home address — street, city, state, and zip code. Once saved, the app uses your location to:
- Look up your specific representatives (federal and state)
- Show elections relevant to your area
- Display your polling places and voter information
You can update your address at any time without losing your saved data.
Can I use the app without entering an address?
Yes. You can browse the Home screen actions, read about the voting and regulation comment processes, and explore app features without an address. However, representative lookups and personalized election info require at least a zip code to identify your district.
What does the app actually send or submit on my behalf?
Nothing is sent automatically. When you tap "Call," the app opens your phone's native dialer with the number pre-filled — you decide whether to place the call. When you tap "Email," the app opens your email app or the representative's official contact form in your browser — you decide whether to send.
The app never places calls, sends emails, or submits comments without your explicit action.
Finding Your Representatives
Why aren't my representatives showing up?
A few things to check:
- Address saved? Go to the Profile tab and make sure a zip code or full address is entered and saved.
- Network connection? The app fetches representatives from government databases and requires internet access on first load.
- Try refreshing. Tap the refresh icon (↻) in the top right of the My Reps screen to force a new lookup.
If problems persist, try clearing the cache by tapping refresh, waiting a moment, and trying again.
Are these representatives up to date?
Federal representatives (U.S. Senators and your House member) are sourced from a regularly synced database and are kept current. State legislators are fetched live from the Open States API. Representative data is cached for up to 24 hours — the "Updated X ago" timestamp on the My Reps screen shows how fresh your data is.
If you notice an outdated entry, tap the refresh icon to fetch the latest data.
I see the wrong representative for my district.
Representative assignments are based on your congressional district, which is determined by geocoding your address. Make sure you've entered a complete street address (not just a zip code) in your Profile for the most accurate district lookup. Zip codes can span multiple districts, which can occasionally return the wrong result.
If the issue persists after entering a full address, please contact us with your address and the representative shown so we can investigate.
How do I call or email a representative?
On the My Reps screen, each representative card has Call and Email buttons.
- Call — opens your phone's dialer with the office number pre-filled.
- Email — opens your email app, or if the representative only has an online contact form, opens it in your browser.
- Website — opens the representative's official government website in your browser.
Elections & Voting
How do I find my polling place?
In the Elections tab, tap any upcoming election card to load your personalized voter information. This includes:
- Your polling location, address, and hours
- Early voting sites and dates
- Ballot drop-off locations
- The candidates and measures on your specific ballot
Voter info requires a zip code or address to be saved in your Profile and requires an internet connection to fetch from the Google Civic Information API.
How do I register to vote or check my registration?
Tap Home → Voter Registration. The screen provides direct links for your state to:
- Check your registration status
- Request an absentee or mail-in ballot
Links are available for all 50 states and Washington D.C. If your state isn't detected, universal links via vote.org are provided as a fallback.
The election information looks wrong or outdated.
Election data is sourced from the Google Civic Information API and cached for 7 days. If something looks off, it may be stale cache. Pull down to refresh on the Elections screen to fetch the latest data.
Candidate and ballot measure data is populated only once the official ballot is certified by your state, which may be several weeks before the election.
How do I create a voting plan?
From Home → Voter Registration, scroll to the Your Voting Plan section. You can choose your voting method (in-person, early voting, or mail), pick a preferred date and time, and save your plan. Your plan is stored locally on your device.
Account & Privacy
How do I reset my password?
On the sign-in screen, tap Forgot Password? and enter your email address. A one-time password (OTP) will be sent to your inbox. Enter the code in the app to verify your identity and set a new password.
How do I delete my account?
To request deletion of your account and all associated data, please contact us with the email address linked to your account. We will process your request within 30 days in accordance with applicable privacy laws.
Where is my data stored?
Guest users: All data (address, issues, activity logs, voting plans) is stored exclusively in your device's local storage (AsyncStorage). Nothing is transmitted to any server.
Signed-in users: Your email address and call count are stored securely in our database (Supabase, hosted in the United States). Your address and activity logs remain on-device.
Troubleshooting
The app is crashing or not loading.
- Force-quit the app and reopen it.
- Make sure your iPhone is running iOS 16 or later.
- Check for an app update in the App Store.
- As a last resort, delete and reinstall the app. Note: this will clear any locally stored data if you are using guest mode. Signed-in users will not lose their account data.
Representative or election data won't load.
- Check that you have an active internet connection.
- Make sure an address or zip code is saved in the Profile tab.
- Tap the refresh icon on the affected screen to retry the request.
- If you see an error message mentioning an API limit, this is temporary — please try again in a few minutes.
Tapping "Call" or "Email" doesn't do anything.
These buttons open Apple's native Phone and Mail apps respectively. If nothing happens:
- For calls: Make sure your device can place phone calls (iPhone with cellular service, or a device paired to one).
- For email: Make sure you have a mail account configured in the iOS Settings → Mail app. If the representative only has a web contact form, your browser will open instead.
I signed in but my activity stats aren't showing.
Activity stats (call count) sync from the server when you open the Profile tab while signed in. Try signing out and back in to force a refresh. If your call count shows 0 despite having made calls while signed in, please contact us.
